The Myth Of Osiris

The ancient Egyptians bealived that each god and goddess had a role in maintaining peace and harmony across the land. Some gods would bring the flood every year while others would offer protection, and some would take care of those who have died. There were also gods that were represented by plants, animals, or towns. The ancient Egyptians believed that in order for life to continue they had to worship the gods. Their is a tale of how some of them were created. It starts off by explaining how before there were ever any gods or goddessess there was water, where one day a hill grew in and appeared Atum the first god ever to be alive. The story goes,He coughed and spit out Shu and Tefnut. Shu was the god of air and Tefnut the goddess of moisture. Shu and Tefnut had two children named Geb(the god of earth) and Nut (the goddess of the sky). Geb and Nut had four children named Osiris, Isis, Seth, and Nephthys. Osiris and Isis were the king and queen of the earth. Seth was the god of chaos, he represented everything that thretened harmony in Egypt and Nephthys was the protector of the dead. Seth, Osiris brother was very jealous of him and his anger caused him to kill Osiris sending him to the under world where he became the god of the dead and ruler of the underworld, while Seth Stayed on Earth as the king. However, Osiris and Isis had a son named Horus. Horus battled againt Seth and regained the thrown. In the end, Horous became king of the earth and Seth of the underworld. This is just one story of many others of how the gods and goddess became known.
